What you will visit during the Fontanelle Cemetery and Rione Sanità Tour
Come and visit one of the most particular neighborhoods of Naples accompanied by an expert guide. You will get in touch with local traditions and beliefs, deepening your understanding of Neapolitan culture.
The Mater Dei neighborhood is located between the Vomero hill and the lower part of Naples, and this is where the Fontanelle Cemetery has found its place – also known as “e Funtanelle”. This cemetery has been transformed into a natural tuff cave, just outside the walls of the ancient Greek Roman city. Used for the first time in 1656 to collect the corpses of plague victims. Over the centuries, it has been recognized as the perfect place to hide and cover corpses and even to make people disappear, making them officially mass graves. Only in 1872 was the structure of the cemetery organized, the skulls and bones were cleaned and the doors opened to the public.
Your guide will explain in detail the cult of the “pezzentelle souls” and the reason why the Neapolitans are so tied to them to the point of adopting the skulls, called “capuzzelle”. And after listening to these stories, the idea of adopting a skull will seriously capture your imagination. After visiting the splendid Fontanelle, your guide will take you to the Rione Sanità, whose name derives from the ancient belief that the area was rich in natural elements to make the air healthy.
The Rione Sanità is located outside the walls of the ancient Neapolis, and many Hellenic tombs and early Christian catacombs have been excavated in the area. For example, the famous catacombs of San Gaudioso belong to this area. At the end of the seventeenth century, it should have become one of the most noble districts of Naples, but over the centuries it has become a popular neighborhood, where it is possible to get in touch with the “real Naples”. A tour off the beaten track of the historic center that will lead you to discover one of the most beautiful and esoteric sides of the city.
